Hello, I am Skip Lee, your Sterling Mayor.  I was born in San Diego, California and came to the Rock River Valley in August of 1972.  As a Navy brat” and son of a “corporate gypsy”, I’ve had the opportunity to live in California, Virginia, North Carolina, Alabama, New Jersey, and even New York City !   I graduated from high school in Arcola, Illinois and from Eastern Illinois University.  I also received a Masters degree from the University of Illinois, Urbana.

My wife and I moved to Sterling in 1979 to our current residence on West 13th Street.  Since that time, we raised three children.  John lives in the Kansas City, Kansas area where he works in permaculture; Will is an attorney and lives in Sterling; and Jennifer lives in Sterling and works for Dana Corporation.  Sue and I have four grandchildren:  Amelia, Olivia, Calvin, and Joseph.  Our other two “children” are a dachshund (Mya) and a Siamese cat (Jinx).

I retired as an instructor and Science Department Chair at Rock Falls High School after 38 years in 2011.  I also taught Chemistry and Biology at Sauk Valley Community College.  My wife of 45 years, Susan, retired as a registered nurse at CGH Medical Center.

I took office as Mayor of Sterling in May, 2011.  I have served on the City Council, Library Board, Congressional and Senatorial Service Academy Selection Boards, and been involved with various community organizations.  I am also a Field Admissions Representative for the U.S. Naval Academy (Annapolis) and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (Kings Point).

Being Mayor is a great honor and I take it very seriously.  My coach and mentor in high school always taught us to leave a place better than when we came to it.  It is my most sincere hope and prayer to do that here in Sterling.  I believe while the journey is not yet over, we have made great strides in improving Sterling.  The team of citizens, community organizations, and the City of Sterling is doing everything it can to make this place and even better place to live, work, and play.  Thank you for the opportunity to be part of this team.

Remember:   Sterling is a vibrant place to Imagine, Create, and Innovate!
