City Council Elections
Council elections are held every 2 years in off year (odd calendar year) elections in the spring. The Mayor and Council members serve 4 year terms. At-Large positions run opposite the Mayor and Ward elections. The next At-Large elections will be in 2013, 2015, 2017..... Mayor and Ward elections will be conducted 2011, 2015, 2019.... Click here to view a ward map of the City.

Voter Registration
In addition to registering at the Illinois Secretary of State Driver Services facility and at Whiteside County offices, you may also register with the City Clerk's office. When coming to register, please bring two pieces of identification that verify your name and address. To be eligible for an election, you must register 30 days prior to an election.

Absentee Voting
You may pick up Absentee Ballot Applications at the City Clerk's office. However, Absentee Ballots cannot be turned into the City Clerk's office. They must be returned to the Whiteside County Clerk's office.

Interested in Running for Office?

Interested in running for a City Council seat in Sterling?  You can find the 2013 Candidate Guide here.  Petitions can start to be circulated August 28, 2012.  The filing period is November 19 - 26, 2012.  Nine signatures are required.  If more than eight candidates submit petitions for the two open positions of Alderman-at-Large in 2013, there will be a primary.  Fun fact: There has not been a primary for the past ten years.  Election are held April 9, 2013.  For more information, please contact the City Clerk's office.
