Code Enforcement Officer
The City of Sterling has a full-time opening for a Code Enforcement Officer. This position is assigned to the Code Enforcement Department and works under the direct supervision of the Building Official.
Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to enforcement of all property maintenance codes, zoning codes, and other ordinances as required for the City of Sterling. Routinely patrols and inspects all types of residential properties to ensure compliance with the codes and ordinances as adopted by the City of Sterling. Documents and maintains a record of all inspections and violations for appropriate actions to achieve compliance and prepare for possible court appearances.
The successful candidate must be certified by ICC as a Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector within twelve (12) months of employment. The candidate should have a general knowledge and understanding of building, general construction codes and a reasonable knowledge of the practices and materials. Position requires excellent written and verbal, communication skills, basic computer skills and public relations skills. A high school diploma (or equivalent) is required with some relevant post high school education desirable. Prior municipal experience is preferred. Must have a valid Illinois driver’s license. Salary is commensurate to experience and qualifications.

All advertising, testing, and establishing a hiring list for the Fire Department is conducted by the Sterling Police and Fire Commission. Once the final list is posted, all new hires will come from that list. The list is good for a two-year period. Once the list expires, the commission repeats the process.

General Requirements: Must be 21 years of age and not have reached your 35th birthday, U.S. citizen, high school diploma or equivalent, valid Illinois driver’s license, and good health and vision. Exam required.
The Sterling Police Department is authorized 31 full time police officers including the Chief of Police. In addition to the patrol function, positions are available as detective, K-9 officer, DARE officer, drug taskforce officer, school resource officer and youth officer.
Every two years a list of eligible candidates is established through testing by the Board of Fire and Police Commission. As needed candidates are chosen from the list in ranked order. The candidate must then complete an extensive background investigation including a polygraph exam. If approved, the candidate must undergo a psychological and medical examination. Once judged acceptable by the commission, the candidate will be hired and attend 12 weeks basic training at a state certified police training academy. Upon graduation he or she will undergo a 14 week field training program at the department before being released to "solo" patrol. Candidates are on probation for one year following graduation from the basic training academy.
